EXHIBITION I | CURRENT EXHIBITION | 21 – 26 SEPTEMBER 2026 | GALLERY 8, 8 DUKE STREET, ST JAMES’S, LONDON
Hector McDonnell: Istanbul's Light

A solo exhibition of oil paintings and etchings by Northern Irish painter Hector McDonnell, Istanbul’s Light was created across four years of visits to Istanbul and captures the luminous atmosphere of the Historic Peninsula, Bosphorus ferries, artisan workshops, and cosmopolitan street life.
In his foreword to the exhibition catalogue, Grant Ford, former Head of 19th-Century European Art at Sotheby’s and BBC Antiques Roadshow specialist, writes, “Şule Gazioğlu, who represents Hector at her gallery in Istanbul, shares this deep commitment and has curated this exhibition at Gallery 8, 8 Duke Street, St James’s; Hector captures the unmistakable light and living soul of Istanbul.” Reviewing the exhibition, Cornucopia Magazine and Art Unlimited (Merve Akar Akgün) observe that “McDonnell does not approach Istanbul as an exoticised image of the city; instead, it becomes a living field of memory where light, objects, and lived experience converge, awakening the feeling: ‘I have never been in this room, yet somehow I feel I know it.’”

Ci Demi: Something is Amiss

Presented by Şule Gazioğlu Gallery in the Discovery section of Photo London 2026 at Olympia, London (The National Hall, Stand J23), Ci Demi’s solo presentation Something is Amiss investigates the psychogeography of Istanbul through stark monochrome compositions and daylight flash, uncovering the uncanny tensions beneath the city’s rapidly shifting urban fabric.
Guest-edited by Erdem Moralıoğlu, Issue 71 (Winter 2026) of V&A Magazine (Victoria and Albert Museum, London) features Ci Demi’s newly commissioned photographic portfolio Feeling Our Way (pp. 44–47, with an essay by Colin Ellard) on the cover under the title “Tales of the city: Istanbul is history’s most charismatic capital.” Gallery founder Şule Gazioğlu writes, “Finally, the moment has come to share this; huge congratulations to Ci Demi on photographing the cover story for V&A Magazine, as the museum counts down to its first major exhibition dedicated to Istanbul: a beautiful celebration of photography, of Istanbul, and of Ci Demi’s distinctive eye for capturing the city,” while features in Vogue Türkiye (Dilan Saray) and Al-Monitor (Nazlan Ertan) highlight how his daylight flash and sharp tonal contrast uncover the unseen tensions of the Bosphorus.

Rooted: The Garden Within

Bringing together works by Annette Louise Solakoğlu (large-format photography), Işık Güner (scientific botanical illustration), Yunus Karma (kintsugi and living moss sculptures), and Elena Tash (botanical alchemy and textile installations), Rooted: The Garden Within transformed the Emirgan gallery into a contemplative botanical sanctuary.
Guided by founder Şule Gazioğlu’s reflection that “Nature here is not an external landscape, but a living threshold carrying memory, fragility, and inner equilibrium,” the exhibition was accompanied throughout March 2026 by artist-led salons including Elena Tash’s natural pigment workshop, Yunus Karma’s Kintsugi and Living Moss session, and a botanical illustration talk with Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh Gold Medalist Işık Güner.

Annette Louise Solakoğlu: Ode to Istanbul

Presented at Photo London 2025 at Somerset House, London, Annette Louise Solakoğlu’s Ode to Istanbul series pairs medium-format analogue portraits of Istanbul’s vanishing artisans with timeless studies of Bosphorus landmarks from the Hamidiye Fountain to the Maiden’s Tower.
Writing in Black+White Photography Magazine (Issue 306), Claire Blow observes, “Over the past 20 years Annette Louise Solakoğlu has roamed the streets of Istanbul with her camera, observing and documenting its myriad contrasts and cultures; this deep exploration has led to a refreshingly original portrait of the city,” while Andrew Finkel notes in Cornucopia Magazine, “Istanbul, newly distilled in cool monochrome: her images, which avoid colour and cliché, are both poetic and strangely powerful.”

Annette Louise Solakoğlu: Botanica

Presented alongside Ode to Istanbul at Photo London 2025 at Somerset House, Annette Louise Solakoğlu’s award-winning Botanica series contemplates the fragile sculptural geometry of flora through classical chiaroscuro and large-format analogue precision.
Approaching botanical forms as timeless sculptural presences through a quiet alchemy of light and shadow, the Botanica series received the Gold Award at the London Photography Awards and Second Prize at the 2025 International Photography Awards (IPA), and was highlighted in the Photo London 2025 Somerset House collector programme.

EXHIBITION VI | SEPTEMBER 2024 – ONGOING CURATORIAL SETTING | BÜYÜKADA SPLENDID PALACE HOTEL
Prinkipo Mon Amour: Annette Louise Solakoğlu, Ahmet Abut Collection & Esra Oğuz

Şule Gazioğlu was commissioned to curate an exhibition in the atrium of the historic 1908 Splendid Palace Hotel on Büyükada. Carrying out the creative direction of creating that space, she commissioned artist Esra Oğuz to make a site-specific fabric installation (Stripes) across the wide space above the atrium, pairing 1880–1930 Büyükada archival photographs from the Ahmet Abut Collection with Annette Louise Solakoğlu’s Prinkipo photographic series, which encompasses photographs of Büyükada, the historic Splendid Palace Hotel, and the famed author Leon Trotsky’s house. What began as an exhibition commission became beloved by the hotel, its guests, and visiting collectors; the installation and spatial setting Şule Gazioğlu created have remained in place since September 2024 and continue there today.
In the Financial Times: FT Weekend Magazine (Hester Underhill; Photograph: © Marco Argüello), Marco Argüello’s full-frame photograph documents Esra Oğuz’s suspended fabric installation above the atrium alongside the exhibition space curated and directed by Şule Gazioğlu, noting that “Time moves slowly here; life keeps pace with the gently lapping waters of the Marmara Sea.” Cornucopia Magazine likewise highlighted the project for reviving the architectural and historical memory of Büyükada across the island, the Splendid Palace Hotel, and Leon Trotsky’s house.

Monica Fritz: Out of Place

Accompanied by a critical essay by architectural historian Prof. Paolo Girardelli (Boğaziçi University), Swiss-Italian photographer Monica Fritz’s Out of Place brings together photographs captured across Sicily, India, Yemen, Morocco, Egypt, Jordan, New York, London, and Milan. Eschewing superficial exoticism and the picturesque, Fritz reveals the quiet mystery within the ordinary and the unexpected familiarity of distant worlds.
In his catalogue essay, architectural historian Prof. Paolo Girardelli writes, “Never indulging in the celebration of the ‘typical’ qualities of a place, Monica Fritz prefers to wander out of place; in her gaze, the ordinary becomes mysterious, the exotic appears familiar, silences evoke harmony,” while Art Unlimited (Merve Akar Akgün) notes how Fritz’s photographs blur the boundary between the extraordinary and the everyday across diverse geographies.

Lütfiye Kösten: From the Past & 2021 Inaugural Emirgan Season

Marking the inaugural 2021–2022 exhibition season of Şule Gazioğlu Gallery following its founding in Emirgan in 2021, highlighted by Lütfiye Kösten’s solo exhibition From the Past in Spring 2022. Kösten’s figurative canvases pair graphic linearity and pictographic color fields with piercing gazes that interrogate memory, identity, and timeless presence.
Opening its doors in Emirgan, Istanbul in 2021, Şule Gazioğlu Gallery’s inaugural season and Lütfiye Kösten’s solo exhibition From the Past, bringing together pictographic portraits that meet the viewer’s gaze with quiet intensity, established the gallery as a distinctive curatorial space along the Bosphorus.
