ŞULE GAZİOĞLU GALLERY • ISTANBUL & LONDON • EST. 2021
ABOUT US: ŞULE GAZİOĞLU GALLERY & CURATORIAL PROJECTS
Raised within a three-generation family tradition in antiques and fine art, Şule Gazioğlu pursued Philosophy studies at Galatasaray University and completed her Master’s degree at Sotheby’s Institute of Art in New York. That intellectual foundation has shaped the quiet continuity across the exhibition archive of Şule Gazioğlu Gallery, founded in 2021.
From 19th-century court photographers Sébah & Joaillier and Annette Louise Solakoğlu’s contemplative studies of ancient Ani and her Prinkipo series (documenting Büyükada, the historic Splendid Palace Hotel, and the famed author Leon Trotsky’s house), to the Ahmet Abut Collection and Esra Oğuz’s spatial installation on Büyükada, to Ci Demi and Hector McDonnell in London and Marlborough, each project unfolds along what Gazioğlu describes as “contemporary meets historic,” approaching Istanbul and Anatolia from within rather than through exoticism.
Bridging Istanbul, London (Somerset House, Olympia, and St James’s), and Marlborough, Şule Gazioğlu Gallery pairs archival research with contemporary commissions, while offering curatorial services, historic site curation, and private and institutional collection advisory.
ŞULE GAZİOĞLU GALLERY IN THE PRESS & CURATORIAL SERVICES
1. Cornucopia Magazine (Annette Louise Solakoğlu: The Ancient Grounds of Ani, The Poetry of Silence, and Prinkipo Mon Amour)
International arts and heritage publication Cornucopia Magazine (Issue 65, Andrew Finkel, “The Poetry of Silence”, “Annette Solakoğlu: At the Edge of History”, and “Prinkipo Mon Amour”) highlighted Annette Louise Solakoğlu’s exhibitions at Şule Gazioğlu Gallery: “Istanbul, newly distilled in cool monochrome: the photographs of Annette Louise Solakoğlu... Her images, which avoid colour, cliché and all but a very few people, are both poetic and strangely powerful.”

2. Grant Ford Curatorial Foreword, St James’s London Presentation, and Extended Exhibition at The Little Gallery in Marlborough (Hector McDonnell: Istanbul’s Light & Master of Light & Colour)
Grant Ford, former Head of 19th-Century European Art at Sotheby’s and international fine art advisor, authored the catalogue foreword for the gallery’s 21–26 September 2026 London exhibition at Gallery 8, St James’s: “Şule Gazioğlu, who represents Hector at her gallery in Istanbul, shares this deep commitment and curated this exhibition at Gallery 8, 8 Duke Street, St James’s. Across intimate interiors, Bosphorus ferries, and bustling markets, Hector captures the unmistakable light and living soul of Istanbul.” Following its St James’s London presentation, the exhibition moved to Marlborough, Wiltshire, where it has been extended at The Little Gallery in Marlborough (1 The Parade, Marlborough, Wiltshire, SN8 1NE) under the title Hector McDonnell: Master of Light & Colour from 9 to 30 October 2026. Cornucopia Magazine and Art Unlimited (Merve Akar Akgün) noted: “McDonnell approaches Istanbul not as an exoticised image, but as a living field of memory where light, objects, and lived experience converge, evoking the feeling: ‘I have never been in this room, yet I know it.’”

3. Büyükada Splendid Palace Hotel (1908) Atrium Curation and Esra Oğuz Installation (Featured in the Financial Times)
Şule Gazioğlu was commissioned to curate an exhibition (Prinkipo Mon Amour, pairing 1880–1930 Büyükada archival photographs from the Ahmet Abut Collection with Annette Louise Solakoğlu’s Prinkipo series encompassing Büyükada, the historic Splendid Palace Hotel, and the famed author Leon Trotsky’s house) in the atrium of the historic 1908 Splendid Palace Hotel on Büyükada. She then carried out the creative direction of creating that space and commissioned artist Esra Oğuz to create a site-specific installation with fabrics (Stripes) in the wide expanse above the atrium. Embraced by the hotel, guests, and visiting collectors, the spatial setting and installation created by Şule Gazioğlu have remained permanently on view in the atrium since September 2024. Marco Argüello’s full photograph in the Financial Times (FT Weekend Magazine, “How to coast it – great escapes for summer 2025” by Hester Underhill; Photograph: © Marco Argüello) captures Esra Oğuz’s fabric installation suspended across the wide space above the atrium alongside the exhibition space curated by Şule Gazioğlu: “It’s not hard to see why so many writers have been drawn to Büyükada over the years. Time moves slowly here; life keeps pace with the gently lapping waters of the Marmara Sea.”

4. Photo London 2025, Somerset House (Annette Louise Solakoğlu: Ode to Istanbul and Botanica)
At Photo London 2025, held at Somerset House, London (15–18 May 2025), Şule Gazioğlu Gallery presented Annette Louise Solakoğlu’s Ode to Istanbul alongside Botanica (Gold Winner at the London Photography Awards and 2nd Prize at the 2025 International Photography Awards / IPA). In Black+White Photography Magazine (Issue 306), Claire Blow wrote: “Over the past 20 years Annette Louise Solakoğlu has roamed the streets of Istanbul with her camera, observing and documenting its myriad contrasts and cultures. This deep exploration has led to a refreshingly original portrait of the city that’s far removed from the colourful, chaotic scenes we may be more familiar with.”

In an interview with Vogue Türkiye (by Dilan Saray), Ci Demi remarked: “I take photographs imagining I am shooting a horror film; that is why I called it ‘photographing an invisible monster.’ I want tension,” while curator and gallery founder Şule Gazioğlu noted: “Ci Demi’s works possess a deeply original visual language recognizable at first glance... By bringing historical archives into dialogue with contemporary practices, we curate cohesive ‘contemporary meets historic’ exhibitions.” Al-Monitor (Nazlan Ertan) highlighted how his work “uses daylight flash and sharp tonal contrast to shift focus to the physical presence of the Bosphorus bridge.”
